Tunnel under TIA: Road department drops plan after aviation officials’ rejection

Department of Roads under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has dropped the plan to construct a tunnel road under the Tribhuvan International Airport after the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation as well as the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal rejected the plan.

Nonetheless the plan itself was also developed without any serious study or discussion  with stakeholders. The government had been allocating budget for the project for past two years, with a hope that it would help police ease traffic congestion around Koteshwor area.

However, aviation officials told the Department that constructing the road would keep the only international airport of the country in danger. Likewise, the project is not technically and financially feasible, according to them.

“The issue is settled now. We are not going to construct any tunnel there,” Minister for Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari says.
